We bring GNL to Sardinia

The purpose of HIGAS is to build a storage terminal capable of receiving and storing liquified natural gas in a battery of cryogenic tanks. The plant, under construction in the industrial port of Santa Giusta (OR), allows the storage of liquefied natural gas: approximately 9,000 m3 of liquid.
The supply will be carried out with a special LNG carrier (small ship for the transport of LNG) with a capacity of 7,500 m3. From this terminal will be loaded the tank trucks that will distribute the liquid methane in the special tanks installed at the customers’ sites, as well as in small gas networks for residential and industrial use in the area. Considering that the liquid methane, once regasified, increases its volume by around 600 times, 9,000 m3 of liquid produces about 5,400,000 m3 gas standards. With a terminal of this size it is therefore possible to bring about 250 million m3 of natural gas per year to the island obtaining savings on the current energy cost of over 30%, in addition to the known environmental benefits of methane.


HIGAS brings to Sardinia a source of clean energy able to significantly reduce the polluting emissions of traditional fuels; furthermore HIGAS offers assistance for converting customers to the new fuel, from obtaining the authorizations to the installation of any systems necessary for the storage and correct use.

The supply of fuel for maritime use is one of the strengths of LNG. It represents the best alternative to oil based marine fuels and it guarantees compliance with the SECA directive, Furthermore LNG allows a reduction in pollutant emissions, particularly harmful in port cities, where they can outweigh emissions from vehicular traffic.
HIGAS guarantees the availability of LNG strategically placed in the middle of the Mediterranean, with the possibility of carrying out supplies between ship and ship (ship to ship) and to small satellite storages for the world of cruises, transport, fishing and all the maritime activities that can be converted to this new readily available fuel.
Its gaseous state, lighter than air, also characterizes its behaviour in the marine environment, where it leaves no residue, reduces pollution drastically and leaves no oily deposits in the port area or in the sea.  


Its intrinsic characteristics make LNG the safest fuel currently available. Absolutely harmless to health, it is stored at -162 ° C and atmospheric pressure. Therefore it does not need high pressure containers. In case of leak, it evaporates as consequence of the environmental heat and as soon as it exceeds -100 ° C it becomes lighter than air and spontaneously disperses, leaving no trace on the ground, in the water and in the surrounding environment.
The fire takes place exclusively in the event of a high temperature ignition (600 ° C) and if the methane is in the right proportions mixed with air. Domestic use of methane reduces the risk of accidents by 66% compared to other gaseous fuels that are heavier than air.

The Oristano storage is developed in accordance with the latest safety technologies. Storage is carried out through a double containment, in steel and reinforced concrete, to guarantee, in addition to thermal insulation, the containment in case of failure of a primary vessel. In addition, there is always enough free capacity in the warehouse to completely empty a tank that may be damaged. A special gas management system ensures that each controlled gaseous emission will be captured and sent to the flare, for safe management. Equipped with the maximum degree of automation and surveillance, it guarantees a safe and healthy work environment for employees and the surrounding environment and a reliable source of supply for the island’s customers.
